In previous trainings I learnt to be an instructor who can teach the exercise repertoire well; with Bodytree, I am learning to be a teacher who respects the body in front of me and instill movement confidence.
My first exposure to Bodytree’s Teacher Training was through the Prehab Trainer courses with Daniel and Jerry. For the first time, anatomy didn’t feel like a foreign language. It was taught in such a functional way that is so easy to understand and apply without having to memorise their insertions and origins. Anatomy made sense and it was actually fun! I enjoyed the course so much I decided to attend it a second time.
Through my private sessions with Tabitha, I started to realise that Bodytree teachers taught differently. For one, they have super sharp and well-trained eyes. Secondly, every exercise is so intentional and executing similar exercises I was familiar with felt so much more challenging!
I decided to do the Reformer Teacher Training despite completing one under a different school. These were some aspects that I really appreciate and understood why their teachers teach the way they do:
Learning the ‘why’. I had many questions about the purpose of certain exercises eg. the Tree, which is typically taught in a pretty inaccessible way to clients. after the training, I found value in the piece! Their training encourages you to be curious and strive to really understand the exercise so you become a more independent learner and teachers.
Modifications for clients with different bodies. I used to often question why my client couldn’t do the exercise, why two people can do the same exercise yet have such different sensations eg. Pain. Rather than teaching clients the exercise repertoire, we are taught to identify and appreciate different body structures and encouraged to modify the exercises accordingly. I believe this cultivates kindness and empathy in a teacher, whilst helping them to keep their clients safe, strong and empowered in their practice.
Practice teaching time. We took turns to teach our peers in front of the class and as stressful as that was at times, the feedback given on cueing, what to look out for / how to better use our eyes, and soft skills were truly invaluable.
The presence of fellow teachers who assisted in the training. Having multiple teachers present to support you in your learning felt like such a treat! They were all very approachable and helpful, ready to answer any questions you have there and then which I really appreciated.
The teacher training rekindled a new found appreciation and love for pilates in me, and a renewed sense of meaning in my role as a teacher. It addressed so many questions I once had and I am excited to share everything I’ve learnt with my clients. I cannot wait to complete the full comprehensive training! ☺
